FalconStor Software announced that it has partnered with Total Tec Systems to offer FalconStor storage virtualization appliances and data protection appliances to the mid-market. Total Tec will offer the FalconStor Virtual Tape Library (VTL) Storage Appliances with embedded data de-duplication, the FalconStor Continuous Data Protector (CDP) Storage Appliances, and the FalconStor Network Storage Server (NSS) Appliances for environments using HP servers and HP storage.

ONStor announced that the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami has chosen the ONStor Bobcat NAS gateway for its two data centers. The school chose ONStor's open, clustered NAS solution, because it provides the reliable, interoperable, and scalable architecture that its data centers require to process the hundreds of terabytes of scientific data collected by the university annually.

Brocade and BlueArc Corporation announced a reseller agreement whereby BlueArc will resell the Brocade StorageX file virtualization and management software solution. Through the agreement, BlueArc will offer its customers the Brocade StorageX solution for file virtualization, migration and replication. Brocade StorageX solves pressing file management challenges in distributed heterogeneous environments, including migration, consolidation, remote office data management, centralized backup, business continuity and disaster recovery.

One of the things I like about being in the IT industry is the sense of community. And as both VMware and virtualization in general continue to expand in popularity, the virtualization community continues to grow around it. Case in point, VMware offered a new feature with its VI 3.5 product, Storage VMotion, and members of the community have already started helping others through the creation of additional 3rd-party utilities that help expand the ease of use of this VMware feature.

In 2006, Amazon.com launched several pay-as-you-go services that were aimed at the developer community: Simple Storage Service (S3) which offers unlimited Internet storage, Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) which lets developers create and manage virtual machine instances, and Simple Queue Service for message delivery. For the most part, these services have been fairly robust and worked as advertised. And the services have remained fairly inexpensive since they don't offer a '5-nines' guarantee SLA behind it.
